Safe Steps was founded by Diya Marla, an 11th-grade student in Bangalore. From a young age, Diya recalls observing the world closely, trying to understand how spaces were divided to dictate ‘who belongs where,’ pushing many women to the margins. Feeling compelled to change this, she decided to take initiative – her first step towards helping people around her. A bright and dedicated student, Diya is passionate about subjects ranging from business and psychology to computer science and mathematics. Driven by an enthusiasm for social work, she serves as a club manager for the GirlUp chapter at Harrow International School and has volunteered with Each One Teach One, teaching English to children from underserved communities in Bangalore.
Beyond academics and social work, Diya can be found spending her time engaging in co-curricular activities – be it participating in Model United Nations or sharpening her skills in equestrian and swimming, and consistently seeks opportunities to understand and interact with the world around her. Through Safe Steps, Diya hopes to create tangible change in the lives of women in Karnataka, empowering them with both the physical and emotional resources and support they require.
